The signing of DeAndre Jordan essentially paved the way for the Los Angeles Lakers to move one from Marc Gasol. The former All-Star was the starting center for the team at the beginning of last season but they quickly soured on his ability. For the second time in his career, Gasol is getting traded from the Lakers to the Memphis Grizzlies.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Los Angeles is sending Gasol, a 2024 second-round draft pick and cash for the draft rights to Wang Zhelin.
Gasol made three All-Star teams during his 11 seasons in Memphis, including a Defensive Player of the Year title in 2013. With his career likely wrapping up, the Grizzlies are the perfect team for him to have a farewell tour if he decides to retire at the end of the season.
As Wojnarowski noted, this move will save the Lakers $10 million and opens up a roster spot. They now have money to add a couple of players now or later in the season. Jordan and Dwight Howard were going to be the team’s centers this season so it was just a matter of time before Gasol was shown the door.
